I do try to keep it brief when asked about my trip, but all things considered, people usually lose interest somewhere in the middle and start talking about other things. Or the conversation takes a turn based on some aspect of the trip and never turns back. I do understand; after all, even though this trip was a bit shorter than the last trip, four weeks is a long time, and of course I did and saw so much! So just in case you are interested, a copy of a little diary I kept on my phone follows below, fleshed out with just a bit of additional information and links.
June 3-arrive Glasgow, train to Balloch, boat to Luss and then Balmaha, climb Conic Hill, early dinner at Oak Tree Inn Balmaha, bus and train back to Glasgow, collapse into utilitarian room at Babbity Bowster.
4-Glasgow breakfast at Hutcheson’s, cathedral, necropolis, early dinner outside at Roganos
5 breakfast at Hutcheson’s, train to Stirling, to Alloa in the Ochil Hills, day with Carol Judy and Karine, dinner at their pub-find out name. Back on train watching 10 pm Scottish sunset to lovely luxurious room at Malmaison Glasgow.
6-fly to heathrow, Patrick pick up at airport, chat with Patrick on river, settle into lovely flat at Rotary Court, dinner with Patrick at Mute Swan
7-day at Hampton Court-still and always magical, but crowded, got rained on at lunch, dinner at Mute Swan
8-boat to Kingston-upon-Thames, wander around, gawk at Jack Wills building, try on dress at Hobbs, tea at Dotty’s Tea Room, dinner at ? (Maybe wine and cheese dinner in the garden)
9-day in London-train from Hampton court, Jean Pagarter’s house, Holland Park, Kensington palace, Selfridge’s (lights went out!) Mina Lima store, dinner with Georgian Dining Academy at Simpson’s Tavern on Cornhill in The City, back to Hampton Court flat via the Drain and Waterloo.
10 Harry Potter!-travel day train to Harry Potter aka Warner Brothers Studio Tour at Leavesden, then train back to Euston and the Hilton. Kings Cross and Pancras station, dinner at pub with crapper bathroom-The Parcel Yard
11-train Euston to Warrington-Grant and Jen. Dunham Massey, then dinner at Indian place, watched the football (England lost!)
12-Lake District with Grant and Jen. Tea at Sawrey House Hotel, Beatrix Potter house and gardens at Hill Top, Tarn Hows, lunch in Hawkshead, dinner at home
13 train to Bath, settle in to flat at Bath Boating Station, walk around, meet Glyn and Leslie for dinner at Loch Fyn
14 Roman baths, lunch at Pump Room, Fashion Museum, bought dress at Hobbs, boat back to flat, dinner at Bathwick Boatman
15 Bath Abbey and tower climb, train to London for Taste Festival, met Glyn and Leslie
16 relax, wander Bath during day, Bath theatre at night-Lady Anna At Sea
17 pick up car-day out to Lacock abbey, Bradford on Avon, lunch at Bridge Tea Rooms
18 drive to Port Isaac (Portwenn for Doc Martin fans) via Wells and the cathedral, decadent dinner at Restaurant Nathan Outlaw. Settle in at Morningside B and B
19 rainy day in Port Isaac, dinner at Golden Lion
20 morning Lanhydrock, afternoon Fowey and boat ride, longest day sunset on Port Isaac slipway, dinner at The Mote
21 Lost Gardens of Heligan, early dinner at Fresh From The Sea, Port Isaac
22 drive to Weymouth, walk around town, fish and chips on harbour at The Marina Restaurant, stay at Harbour House B and B
23 referendum day! Drive to Poole via poster exhibit at Dorset County Museum in Dorchester, stay at RNLI college, wine and cheese dinner in room
24-up at 4 am to watch referendum results on TV, drive to Penzance, settle in to Venton Vean, dinner at Old Lifeboat House
25 Merry Maidens stone circle, Minack theatre, lands end, dinner at Turks Head, Penzance
26 St Michaels Mount in am, train to rainy day in St Ives, dinner at Admiral Benbow, Penzance
27 drive to St Clement via lunch and National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth with Manny,Jane and Chesney. Settle in to Old Vicarage B and B,walk to Malpas dinner at Heron Inn
28 Trelissick in am, King Harry Chain Ferry to and from St Just in Roseland Church, wander around Falmouth
29 day in Truro-laundry, post office, cathedral with “art”, viaduct, Victoria Gardens, wine and cheese dinner at my B and B The Old Vicarage, St Clement
30 drive to Bath to drop off car,stop at Castle Drogo on the way. Train to slough, cab to Eton. Settle into Crown and Cushion-pub with rooms. Dinner at Côte Brasserie on the river
July 1-train to London to meet Amanda. Coffee at seven dials, walk to Mina Lima, Charing cross road for Shakespeare, lunch at Whole foods. Tube back to her dorm. Then I walked across bridge to lincoln’s inn fields. Tube and train back, dinner at Crown and Cushion
2-walk around Eton and Windsor, Windsor Castle, Long Walk. Dinner at Crown and Cushion
3 taxi to Heathrow-home!
